How a discount is calculated
The amount saved is the original price multiplied by the discount percent divided by 100. The final price is the original price minus that saving.
For example, 25% off a $80 item saves $20, leaving a final price of $60.
Smart shopping tips
Stacked discounts do not simply add up: 20% off then a further 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
To compare deals quickly, focus on the final price rather than the headline percentage — a bigger percentage off a higher starting price is not always cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
- Does it show how much I save?
- Yes. The calculator shows both the final price and the exact amount saved.
- Can I use it for tax too?
- For sales tax or VAT, use the VAT calculator, which adds or removes a tax percentage rather than subtracting it.
